UPDATE: TPD Officer injured in midtown shooting

A Tucson Police Sergeant is hospitalized in stable but critical condition following an early morning shooting in midtown.

It happened Sunday morning on the 4000 block of East Elmwood, near Broadway and Alvernon.

Speaking moments ago at UAMC, Tucson Police Chief Roberto Villaseñor Tucson confirmed to Tucson News Now, Sgt. Robert Carpenter, 46, was shot in the head while responding to an attempted break-in at approximately 5:15 a.m. Carpenter underwent surgery, and was said to be responding to questions, and is now aware of his surroundings. His family and fellow officers are also at the hospital.

In addition to several officers, a Tucson Police S.W.A.T. Team is now at the scene near Broadway and Alvernon, as they continue to search for a suspect.

Police are looking for a man they described as a person of interest in the case. He is as an Hispanic man, between 20 to 30 years 5'8, 160 lbs, with a shaved head. He was wearing a dark blue jersey with the number "43" in large red lettering, and light colored blue jeans.

Anyone with information is urged to call 9-1-1 or 88-Crime.
