TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The search continues today for someone who shot a Tucson Police officer in the head early Sunday morning.

Police are looking for a person of interest, whom they saw running from the scene before the shooting, when they responded to the first of two alarms at the location.

Today they are asking for help from anyone who may have been in the midtown neighborhood northeast of Broadway and Alvernon - taxi drivers, delivery drivers or anyone else who may have noticed something unusual.

Sgt. Robert Carpenter was rushed to the University of Arizona Medical Center and is recovering from surgery.

Tucson News Now has been told he underwent surgery and was said to be responding to questions and his surroundings.

Carpenter was shot when he was responding to the second alarm at the midtown home. It was the second time in a period of a few hours that the burglar alarm went off.

The suspect is still on the loose.  Police searched the neighborhood all day Sunday. Numerous law enforcement agencies and dogs scoured the area.

When police arrived the first time, they saw a man running away from the home, but after a massive search, police did not find anyone.

TPD has released a photo of a hat found at the scene.  Police say this is a key piece of evidence and believe the person wearing this hat has information; and are now saying this is a 'person of interest' in the case.

He is described as a Hispanic man in his 20s or 30s, 5'8" tall, and 160 pounds. He has a shaved head and was seen wearing a dark blue jersey with the number 43 in big red letters.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
