TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Tucson News Now has learned that police detained a person of interest in connection with the shooting of a Tucson police officer.

Sgt. Robert Carpenter was shot in the head early Sunday morning.

Tucson Sgt. Maria Hawke said, "At this time, we can confirm that a person of interest has been detained. There have been no charges brought against the suspect or any other persons at this time."

Carpenter was shot when he was responding to an alarm at a midtown home near Broadway and Alvernon. It was the second time in a period of a few hours that the burglar alarm went off.

He was rushed to the University of Arizona Medical Center and is recovering from surgery. Tucson News Now has been told he was responding to questions and his surroundings.

When police arrived at the scene after the first alarm, they saw a man running away from the home, but after a massive search, police did not find anyone.
