More details on I-10 crash that shutdown westbound lanes

Posted: Updated:

A driver was killed when his truck burst into flames after an accident Tuesday afternoon near the Interstate 10-Interstate 8 split west of Tucson.

All westbound lanes near Casa Grande were shut down for more than five hours, starting around 2:15 p.m., the Arizona Department of Public Safety said. All lanes were reopened before 8 p.m.

The accident was a three-vehicle collision involving a bus, semi truck and pickup truck the DPS said.

According to the DPS, the pickup truck was heading the wrong way on I-10 when the bus hit the pickup. It is unknown where the pickup entered the highway.

Francis Wilkens Gibson Jr., of Casa Grande, 78, was driving the pickup that burst into flames after hitting the bus. Gibson was killed.

According to DPS, "The bus had 16 people onboard including the driver. 9 passengers were injured but none of the injuries are considered life threatening. It now appears the bus driver was not injured. TBC is a U.S. Bus Company registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation. It is believed the passengers were traveling from Mexico to Phoenix at the time of the crash. Two injured passengers were flown to Casa Grande Regional Hospital. The other injured were taken by ground ambulance to the same facility."

Williams said the semi-truck was a Fry's grocery store truck. It was hit but had very little damage.

The crash still remains under investigation.
