A woman in her 60s was hit by a car on the northwest side Tuesday night and suffered life-threatening injuries.
Eastbound Ruthrauff Road at La Cholla Boulevard was closed after the incident around 8 p.m.
Westbound was down to one lane, Northwest Fire Capt. Adam Goldberg said.
According to Pima County Sheriff's deputies, the driver of the vehicle initially fled the scene, making it all the way home, but later returned before deputies had to search for him.
Pima County Sheriff Deputy Tom Peine said that a blood sample of the driver was taken to test for toxins. Peine said the investigation is ongoing and an arrest is pending.
The woman was wearing dark clothing when she attempted to cross Ruthrauff in front of a mobile home park. She was not in a cross walk and the area was not well lit, according to deputies.
The driver was traveling at the speed limit when he swerved trying to not hit the woman.
Peine said the woman is in critical condition.
