Holiday travel this year is up from 2011 numbers

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

As many know today, the day before Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the year.  And experts say more people are traveling this year than last year.

Tripadvisor says that most who are traveling are hitting the road or the runway during non-peak hours, trying to avoid the worst of Thanksgiving travel.

35 percent of people are traveling in 2012, just a tick higher than in 2011.  Most are driving and some are flying despite higher ticket prices.

Here is an interesting fact – half of the travelers are coming home on Sunday or even later.  There might be lots of coffee machines running Monday morning, or quite a few people calling in sick.

There is a little something to be thankful for as well, at least the holiday travelers will, gas prices have been dropping for the last month or so.

ADOT has even put several projects on hold for the holiday travelers, trying to make the roadways as smooth as possible.  There may still be accidents out there.  The AZ-511.gov site may be jammed, so remember to give it a little time.
