TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A popular hiking trail on "A" Mountain is getting a new name.

The City of Tucson is renaming the Sentinel Ridge Trail the Gilbert Escandon Jimenez Trail.

Community members got 500 signatures on a petition so they could honor the 87-year-old Jimenez.

He has been hiking the trails of Sentinel Peak Park for more than 50 years.

The World War II veteran has also been extremely helpful in keeping the trails in that area safe and clean for others to enjoy.

"I started hiking here these trails with my dad and my grandfather many many years ago," Jimenez said. "I kept on hiking. My hiking started because of them. They're both old citizens of Tucson."

Jimenez has been a member of the Southern Arizona Hiking Club for 47 years.
