A Tucson man was arrested for leaving the scene of an accident in which a woman was critically injured on Tuesday night.

According to a news release from the Pima County Sheriff's Department, Abraham Diaz Hernandez, 31, went home after the accident then returned to the scene after speaking with family members.

The release said Hernandez cooperated with Pima County Sheriff's deputies who were still there investigating the accident.

Hernandez was booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center on a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury.

The victim, a 56-year-old woman, remains in critical condition at the University of Arizona Medical Center.

According to the release, Hernandez was traveling east on Ruthrauff Road toward La Cholla Boulevard at about 7:40 p.m. Tuesday. The victim walked into the roadway in front of Hernandez, who swerved but was unable to avoid striking her.

The release said the victim, who was wearing dark clothing, was not in a crosswalk and the area is not well-lit.

Hernandez had no obvious signs of impairment and speed does not appear to be a factor, the release said.
