AZGFD educates public on living with mountain lions

Posted: Updated:

Experts from the Arizona Game and Fish Department will be at Sabino Canyon Recreation Area today (Saturday), to provide information to visitors about mountain lions.

Public Information Officer Mark Hart tells Tucson News Now, Game and Fish staff will answer questions, display mountain lion artifacts and provide information about topics including mountain lion traits and behaviors, what to do if one is seen, and reporting sightings.

AZGFD experts will be at the Visitors Center at 5700 N. Sabino Canyon Road from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Hart says sightings and encounters typically increase at Sabino Canyon between Thanksgiving and Easter, because of higher than average use of the recreation area.

Hart adds AZGFD has fielded nearly 50 mountain lion sighting and encounter calls in the Santa Catalina and Rincon Mountain areas since last year. Most are from in or around Sabino Canyon, which visited by up to 2,500 people daily during peak season.
