Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and now Giving Tuesday

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

First it was Black Friday, then Cyber Monday, and tomorrow it's Giving Tuesday.

It's for everyone who's ready to dish out dollars for a good cause.

There are a bunch of downtown non-profits who could benefit from Giving Tuesday.

But the trick with giving is to make sure your money is going to the right place.

The Fox Theater is a piece of Tucson history that continues to deliver the classics.

"The arts is what makes people, inspires them, makes them feel good," said Craig Sumberg.

Tomorrow the theater will host a happy hour for the arts as part of Giving Tuesday.

The non-profit is one of several arts and cultural groups aiming to balance their books amid the fences and barricades of Modern Streetcar construction.

"Ten to twenty percent of every individual show is being hurt by people's perception of downtown, it's to hard to park, it's just too much of a hassle.  The block in front of the Fox still looks like an archeological dig," he said.

The Fox Theater is just one of hundreds of local charities. While there's plenty of worthy causes out there, you do have to do your homework.

Want your donation dollar to do the most?

The Better Business Bureau suggests to first check how much the charity spends on the cause compared to overhead. Don't feel like you have to give on the spot, so beware of high pressure pitches and don't waste your money on items the charity doesn't actually need.

Another group wants your cash in the classroom.

"Imago Dei Middle School serves children of low income families in grades five through eight."

The downtown school offers free tuition to more than 60 students, giving them the chance to excel and rise out of poverty.

"Our first ever graduate has just entered college.  We raised his reading scores up by five grades in a single year and he graduated with honors, went on to San Miguel high school and graduated there with honors, and now he's a pre-med student."

Imago Dei encourages people to give through tax credits.

There are hundreds of charities banking on tomorrow's day of giving, but you want to give wisely.
