Hurricane season ends today

Posted: Updated:

After an active hurricane season in both the Atlantic and East Pacific, the season ends quiet with no named storms in November. The Atlantic Basin hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. The East Pacific hurricane season starts on May 15 and also ends on November 30.

The Atlantic Basin Season ends with only two unused names on the list (see below). Tony was the last named storm with Valerie and William sitting unused at the end of the season.

If all the names were used on the official list, according to the World Meteorological Organization forecasters would use the Greek alphabet to name storms.  The only year Greek letters were used to name tropical storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin was in 2005 when 28 storms formed during the year.

Below are the final numbers for this year compared to the Atlantic Basin average and the National Hurricane Center's forecast for the 2012 season.  The season ended up with more storms than forecasted by the NHC.

East Pacific tropical storms and hurricanes are also a concern for the United States.  These storms can rev up monsoon action in the western U.S., including here in Arizona.  NOAA's Climate Prediction Center forecast for the Pacific Basin is below compared to the average and observed numbers this year.
