The latest high school graduation rates are out, and the numbers are not in Arizona's favor.
The numbers are not specific to any one school or TUSD, but they can be seen coming to life at all the campuses throughout Arizona.
In the state 78 percent graduated in four years, that puts Arizona in the bottom half of the country. But when it comes to English language learners (ELL), only 25 percent got their diploma in four years. That is the lowest rate in any state.
E.L.L. students must take four hours of English each day, leaving them less time to earn credits for graduation. Some officials say the four year rates are a bit deceptive. More than one-in-four students graduate, they just need more time.
The overall graduate rate, at 78 percent, is three points higher than last year.
Officials are using a better method to get more accurate numbers.
