Humane Society temporarily turning away cats

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Humane Society of Southern Arizona announced today that it will not accept cats at its main shelter for at least two weeks as it tries to contain an outbreak of a feline virus.

People can take unwanted cats to Pima Animal Care Center at 4000 N Silverbell Rd. as an alternate.

This outbreak of the Calicivirus is considered mild, but an aggressive approach of isolating, treating and sanitizing is required to prevent further spread.

Calicivirus is a strain of an upper-respiratory infection that only affects cats. Cats that have been exposed to the virus can shed the disease for up to 75 days – even without showing symptoms.

The Humane Society is putting its cat population into quarantine for treatment at a separate location while its shelters are sanitized.
