TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Happening this weekend, a free event that can help keep your car safe from thieves, VIN etching.

Many people are hitting up the shopping malls this holiday season, and this is the perfect time for thieves to get ahold of someone's car.

That is why this weekend, everyone can help keep their cars safe, by doing it and it takes just about ten minutes.

The Green Valley Sheriff's Auxiliary Volunteers are etching vehicle identification numbers or VINs on various parts of the car.

VIN etching, is the permanent engraving of a vehicles specific VIN onto the windshield and windows. This makes it difficult for thieves to profit off selling these parts and it makes it difficult for thieves to dispose of the vehicle.

A number of insurance companies offer a discount if your vehicle is protected by VIN etching.

Anyone can get it done this weekend for free.

The event is happening at the Green Valley Sheriff's Auxiliary Volunteers Office, at 601 N. La Canada Drive, from noon to 3 p.m.
