Vote to continue discussion on controversial development plan

ORO VALLEY, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Oro Valley Town Council voted to continue the process of hearing about a plan that some say could harm Catalina State Park.  They did not announce the next time that they will take up the matter.

Approximately 150 people filled the room for the public hearing, and at least 33 filled out speaker cards.

On the table for discussion was an amendment to the voter-approved general plan that would accommodate the ‘Desert Springs' Development.  But Oro Valley would have to annex the land, which is owned by developer, Sun Chase Holdings.

The area under discussion, on the east side of the intersection of Tangerine and Oracle, is a the 108 acre lot in Pima County that is surrounded by Catalina State Park on three sides.

The amendment would allow Desert Springs to build higher density residential, meaning more buildings on the same 108 acre lot.

Environmental groups say that could wreak havoc on the wildlife in the state park.  The Council heard comments Wednesday night and did not vote on the plan, but instead voted to continue the discussion.
