'Disconnected youth' hit hardest by unemployment

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The rising unemployment rate is hitting one group especially hard – teens and young adults.  The level of unemployed young people is the highest it's been in more than 50 years.

Nearly 6.5 million teens and young adults are out of work, or out of school.  The highest level since WWII, and the impact spreads to affect everyone.

These numbers and analysis comes from the ‘Kid Count' report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation.  This report calls them the ‘disconnected youth.'  Not in high school or not in the workforce.  The report focuses on employment and says young people are competing in a tougher environment.

There are fewer entry level jobs, and more competition from older workers with more experience.  It also warns of the ripple effects that everyone could feel.

This group of ‘disconnected youth' is less likely to be financially stable and could continue a cycle of poverty as they struggle to find work.

The report also stated that dropouts cost taxpayers as much as $350 billion a year in jail costs and lost wages.

It also offers some solutions, including challenging employers to offer jobs and career paths for young people.
