Happening today, communities on the west side are rallying up to protect three of their TUSD schools that are up for closure.
Community members from Brichta, Manzo and Menlo Park Elementary schools will be speaking at the rally.
Maxwell Middle School is the fourth west side school that is up for closure. Organizers today are focusing on the three elementary schools; they say closing down these schools would have devastating consequences on the children in the area.
Many organizers have personal ties to these schools, some have attended them and have generations of family who have as well.
TUSD leaders have said it is not a matter of targeting schools in any given area. The district said their decisions are based on where there is not enough enrollment, and while there is some growth south of this area, numbers are still low.
Later today the community surrounding these three west side schools will gather to make their voices heard.
The rally will take place at Joaquin Murrieta Park, near Silverbell and Grant at 12:30 p.m. today.
