Food bank about $400,000 short in donations

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona needs your help. Hundreds of people are lining up outside the food bank to get food boxes every morning. Officials worry about making sure every family gets the help they need this holiday season.

"December is certainly our busiest month of the year. There are lines of people of every age, every profession," said Bill Cargenie, CEO of the food bank.

They're working hard, as fast as they can to meet the demand, but donations have been slow coming in.

Right now the community food bank is about $400,000 short in monetary donations.  If they cannot make up the difference, this means they could be operating in the red all year. And with the holidays around the corner it's a stressful time for many.

The food bank just spent a $250,000 to try to buy holiday hams for families in need. Every dollar they get goes a long way.

"Every dollar we have, we can distribute $9 worth of food," Carnegie said.

If you would like to help, you can make a donation online at www.communityfoodbank.org. You can also drop off food donations, checks or volunteer by contacting officials at the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona at 520-622-0525.
