Donations and tributes are pouring in to Newtown from all across the country. But the Better Business Bureau has some words of advice before pulling out the checkbook.
Here are a few warnings donators should listen to:
Find trusted charities, there may be newly-created organizations and some are not managed as well as established ‘tried and true' charities.
Respect the victims, some organizations do not get permission to use names or photos, and end up receiving only complaints. Some families of victims may set up their own assistance funds.
Tax-exempt status, not all organizations that collect donations are a tax-exempt charity. That means for donators the donation might not be tax deductible.
