Today Tucson is taking part in the National Homeless Person's Memorial Day. One local group is honoring the victims of homelessness here in Tucson.
A special memorial service will happen today at the Evergreen Cemetery in midtown. Victims of homelessness will be honored and remembered with music, speeches from elected officials and those who knew them.
It is being put together by the Primavera Foundation, a group dedicated to helping those suffering from poverty. The organization says the memorial service is a time to acknowledge and to honor the lives of homeless men and women.
The Primavera Foundation adds it is also a way to bring awareness to the issue of homelessness. Recent research shows over two thousand people in Pima County are homeless, many are veterans, domestic violence victims and the mentally ill; without a safe, warm place to call home they are three times more likely to die than the general public.
The service is open to the public and is being held at the west end of the Evergreen Cemetery, at 4 p.m. today.
