Vote tonight for TUSD school closures

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Happening today, it is decision day for 14 Tucson schools on the chopping block.  The Governing Board for Tucson Unified School District is expected to make its final vote whether to close those schools.

There will be a last minute rally for Howenstine High School tonight, when parents and students will get together to make one last plea to stay open; they are one of the 14 schools scheduled to close.

There are 13 other schools that will have their fate decided tonight.  It will be either an up or down vote on each of the 14 schools.

There have been several passionate public hearings in the past month.  The district is a couple of difficult challenges, a declining enrollment and a $17 million budget gap, but even if it closes all these schools, it would only gain back about $6 million.

If schools are voted to be closed that would go in effect by the beginning of the next school year.

For those who wish to attend the meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. at Catalina Magnet High School Tucson News Now will be at the meeting later this evening, sending out breaking news alerts as the decisions come in.
