Around the same time that the Tucson Unified School District governing board will be deciding the fate of 14 schools facing closure, a local charter school will be making a pitch to an eastside neighborhood.
The Sky Island Academy is looking to expand by moving into the former Rogers Elementary campus. They'll be meeting with residents in that area to hear whether they have any concerns.
In the past, residents living near vacant campuses have complained about a rise in crime, graffiti, and other blight.
A spokesperson for Sky Island Academy says the Rogers campus would be ideal for the amount of land. The charter focuses on environmental studies as well as core classes. The charter hopes to move in by August of 2013.
