TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
Even with military budget cuts looming on
the fiscal horizon, the Raytheon Corporation's Tucson
plant is being awarded another lucrative missile contract.
The U.S. Navy has committed to a multi-year
deal worth just under $227 million for Raytheon's "sea-sparrow" missile system for 2015.
A separate contract worth $140 million
is also in place for 2013.
Sea-sparrow missiles are surface-to-air
projectiles designed to be launched from ships moving in ocean water.
The sea-sparrow system will be used to
protect Navy ships from aerial attacks by enemy planes.
Most of the production work will be done
right here in Tucson. The project is expected to be done by September of 2016.
