Pima County libraries are holding crane-making events to create a memorial for the Newtown community.
In Japanese culture, paper cranes represent happiness, longevity, and eternal youth, because of their life span of a thousand years. They also stand for peace and healing.
Debbie Chavez, a Pima County librarian, came up with the idea to send the cranes to Sandy Hook Elementary school after being inspired by the paper cranes for Gabby Giffords at UAMC after the Jan. 8, 2011 shooting.
The librarians have been providing paper and origami folding instructions for anyone who would like to help. Two branches are holding events that are free and open to the public on Saturday, Jan. 29:
Valencia Branch Library, 202 W. Valencia Rd., 594-5390
Origami Making Event, 1 p.m.
Eckstrom-Columbus Branch Library, 4355 E. Calle Aurora (the library's temporary location), 594-5285
Origami Making Event, 3 – 4 p.m.
Each string has 27 cranes to honor the 27 victims in Newtown, CT.
