Like all great things, they eventually come to an end. Tonight that was the case for the Festival of Lights at Winterhaven.
Homeowners began putting up decorations during the first week of December. There are thousands of lights throughout the neighborhood. Residents painted, cut out holiday figures and even arranged music to go with the lights. The Festival of Lights began on December 15th and since then it has been non-stop visitors. For some it has been a long 2 weeks. "Well it's like running in a marathon, this is the last mile right here, it's tough," said Alan Cowgill one of the vendors.
Each home has a different theme. The theme at the Torres home was an eye catcher. They have a side for people that are naughty and a side for people that are nice. The Torres family has been putting up displays for more than 20 years. Each year they have a different display. Most of the time, the display is inspired by their children or grandchildren. "We make it fun, all the family comes, friends come by this the time of year," said Elsa Torres a homeowner.
As part of the event, they collect non-perishable items or canned goods. Those items are then donated to the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona. Last year over 45 thousand pounds of food and more than 19 thousand dollars were donated.
