2 California teens seriously injured in I-10 accident

PINAL COUNTY, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Two California women were seriously hurt, with one suffering life-threatening injuries, in a rollover accident today near Picacho Peak.

The women were driving eastbound toward Tucson when the accident happened on Interstate 10 around 3:10 p.m., Avra Valley Fire spokesman Patrick Calhoun said. It appeared the car rolled multiple times.

Both were flown to a Tucson hospital.

The 18-year-old driver was listed in stable condition. Her 19-year-old passenger suffered life-threatening injuries.

The driver told Avra Valley Fire they were from Orange, Calif., traveling to Tucson to visit friends for New Years.

The accident happened at I-10 at mile marker 217, about 3 miles west of Picacho Peak, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.

Calhoun said the freeway reopened all eastbound lanes around 4:30 p.m.

Avra Valley Fire, Eloy Fire, Southwest Ambulance and the DPS responded to the scene.
