Sheriff: Overcrowded Catalina Highway closed

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Pima County Sheriff's Department has again closed Catalina Highway because of overcrowded conditions.

The road up Mt. Lemmon was opened this morning to all traffic for the first time since a winter storm delivered 10 inches of snow.

But so many people took advantage of the improved road and weather conditions and a holiday that authorities again had to close the road. The closure was announced in a Sheriff's Department tweet.

Pima County Sheriff's Deputy Tom Peine said there's was a LONG line of cars wanting to go up to Mount Lemmon.

So the deputies started letting one car go up for every car that came down.

That worked for a short time before the sheriff shut it back down again just moments ago.

Peine warns drivers to be careful coming down and to be careful on side streets after coming down on Houghton and Tanque Verde.

There was no indication on when the road would reopen.

The road was closed last night after being open only to residents and employees with 4-wheel drive or chains yesterday after the storm.
