A 400 pound alligator will be transferred from its current home in Scottsdale to a preserve in Florida.
The alligator, named Spike, was seized by law enforcement in 2005. Spike was rescued after a trailer with 32 illegally kept reptiles was stopped near Casa Grande.
Spike was at the time 5 feet long. Now he is 9 feet and has outgrown is current home at the Phoenix Herpetological Society.
A special crate will be made for Spike and he will begin his road trip across the country on January 10. He must be driven because he is over the weight limit to fly to Florida.
There are two large female alligators waiting for Spike at the natural habitat in Florida. He will be a part of a breeding program.
