MT. LEMMON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
More traffic is expected as people head up to check out the snow on Mt. Lemmon.
The highway is open today for people to go up after the Pima County Sheriff's Department closed it off. It was a different story on New Year's Day, when the road was closed not because of the weather, but because the road got overcrowded with people going up to see the snow.
Sheriff's deputies want to remind everyone to stay safe by keeping a few things in mind.
Before even heading out to the area call the Pima County road hotline for updates on road closures. Watch your speed limit and park in the designated areas.
Once you are up the mountain and want to ski or sled, make sure you are not doing so near roadways. Adjust your driving, watch out for ice on the roads.
Sheriff's deputies are asking people to refrain from taking one type of souvenir that can turn dangerous.
"We ask people to please refrain from taking snow down into the valley because what happens is when they load the snow on the roof of the vehicle hood or wherever it may be, it begins to shift and slide off during their trip down and ends up on the opposite side of the roadway," said Deputy Tom Peine, from the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
They say it can create ice patches.
