Sat. events commemorate Jan. 8 shootings, support Newtown

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Various groups are inviting the public out on Saturday to participate in a number of events all around Tucson and Pima County.

The BEYOND Event is really a series of events - hikes, bike rides, exercise activities - for all ages and skill levels.

It was started last year by the extended family of Gabe Zimmerman, one of the six victims killed in the mass shooting on Jan. 8, 2011. The family wanted a large-scale event for people to commemorate the anniversary and connect with family and neighbors.

In its second year, BEYOND is bigger and better.

From sunrise into the late afternoon, events are happening all around Pima County. From hikes at Catalina State Park to trail runs in Sabino Canyon.

There are many exercises scheduled to happen at the main event called "Together We Move!" between noon and 4 p.m. at Armory Park downtown. There will be art walks, a bike ride downtown, and classes on yoga, zumba, and line dancing.

Children's Museum Tucson will have free admission on Saturday. All guests will receive a green ribbon and a Ben's Bells Kindness Coin in honors of the anonymous donor who underwrote the donation.

The ribbon is a call for guests to "pay it forward" with a random act of kindness. Guests will be asked to wear the ribbon until they have performed their individual act of kindness.

People are also invited to sign a banner, which will be sent to Newtown, CT, where a gunman killed 20 children and teachers last month. The banner will read, "We're with you, Newtown. From your friends in Tucson, Arizona."

You can learn more about all of the events at the Beyond Tucson webpage.
