BEYOND organizers expect larger turnout this year

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Organizers of the second annual BEYOND event are expecting a larger turnout this year.  BEYOND is a day of outdoor activities happening on the first Saturday of the year.

BEYOND was inspired by survivors of the January 8th shooting and their loved ones, including Ross Zimmerman.  He's the father of congressional staffer, Gabe Zimmerman, who was killed when Jared Loughner opened fire at the Congress on Your Corner event nearly two years ago.  Five others were fatally shot.

"Various people have said various things about what kind of athlete he was," says Zimmerman.  He says his son had more outdoors enthusiasm than he did endurance.

"We went up to the Grand Canyon a couple of times and trotted across the Grand Canyon together.  Though I admit the first time he abandoned me because he could go a lot faster."

Playful competition and time together were the highlights of many family trips.  Zimmerman wants other families to enjoy the same values at BEYOND events, which start early Saturday morning and run throughout the day.

"Almost on a daily basis I miss Gabe and have this feeling that not much is worth while without him around," says Zimmerman.   "There's things that need to be done, and Gabe would have wanted those things to be done."
