Pima County will be celebrating a major milestone today; the new court complex downtown is halfway done.
The last beam will be placed on the seven story court complex marking a major milestone for Pima County.
Dozens of constructions workers will sign the beam before it is lifted up and placed on the framework. The county says they are actually ahead of schedule.
Construction started about a year ago, but the project has been in the works for much longer. It was a bond issue approved by voters back in 2004. A few things have recently changed.
The City and County were both in on the project together, but the City pulled out of the project saying it couldn't afford its $17 million share anymore.
The County decided to go ahead and fund the rest of the project themselves. Right now they are digging into money from the general fund, to finish the project; when complete the building will just be for county employees.
Today the ‘topping off' ceremony marks the halfway point. Completion is expected to be done by 2015.
The ceremony is expected to take place today at 10 a.m.
