2012 was the hottest year on record for nation, according to the National Climate Data Center (NCDC).

Records date back to the 1890s. The old record hot year occurred in 1998. 2012 sent that record into a distant second, beating it by 1°.
In the image below you can see all the states registered above average temperatures for the year. The numbers in each state indicate how they were for the year. The higher the number, the warmer the state was for the year.
