Martin Luther King Day 2013 in Tucson will once again be a day to honor the memory of the civil rights leader with some of the best high school basketball Tucson has to offer.
Cultural awareness and good sportsmanship/citizenship are celebrated at the 7th Annual MLK BASKETBALL CLASSIC by honoring student-athletes, student performances of the national anthem and halftime cheer/dance team presentations as well as recognition of faculty and administrators.
$500 scholarships will be presented to student-athletes who participate in an essay contest with the theme "What Martin Luther King Jr. Day means to me."
"This is an opportunity for high school student-athletes to honor the legacy of Dr. King through friendly games on the basketball court," said Herman House, tournament director and Director of Interscholastics for the Tucson Unified School District.
"Through the scholarship recognition process, the tournament is truly a community celebration of culture, classroom and competition!"
The Classic also offers seven games being played at two sites in the Phoenix area as well.
The MLK Basketball Classic is sponsored locally by Tucson Unified School District and is presented by Coaches for Charity. All games will be played at McKale Center on the campus of The University of Arizona.
