TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
Cochise County shivered through record-low temperatures Sunday as a cold wave continued to move through Southern Arizona.
The temperature dropped to 7 degrees in Willcox and Douglas and 16 in Sierra Vista, all record lows, the National Weather Service said.
"That ranks as the second all-time coldest temperature recorded in Douglas for the month of January," First Alert Meteorologist Cuyler Diggs said. "The coldest was 6 degrees in January of 1949."
Cochise County Sheriff's spokesperson Carol Capas said the department had multiple calls Saturday night and Sunday morning and afternoon for weather-related incidents.
Among the incidents, a 13-year-old Elfrida girl reported she was home alone when pipes in the ceiling burst, Capas said. In another, a Sierra Vista woman called 9-1-1, asking how to turn off her water.
"People are not used to it being this cold outside," Capas said. "We want to remind people to be aware. Listen to the warnings and advisories about taking care of pets, pipes and plants."
In Pima County, Tucson dipped to 23 at Tucson International Airport and 24 at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, National Weather Service Meteorologist Jim Meyer said. Catalina State Park reported 13 degrees.
Santa Cruz County saw its coldest weather of the New Year -- 8 degrees in Elgin, 13 in Amado and 14 in Nogales.
It was 30 at Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix and 18 in Casa Grande.
"It could be colder tonight to the west of Tucson," Meyer said. "East of Tucson, it will not be a whole lot colder."
Diggs said temperatures will start to rise Tuesday morning.
"A warming trend is on the way for the end of week," he added. "Beginning Thursday, we should see lows moderate into the 30s with daytime highs in the 60s."
