PHOENIX -- Two 15-year-olds had to be rescued from the White Tank Mountains Sunday after being struck by a 300 to 400 pound boulder.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said deputies received a 9-1-1 call just after 12 p.m., and rescue crews found the teens about 50 yards off the Goat Camp trail on a steep hillside.
Deputies arrived to find that a 15-year-old boy had a compound fracture to his left leg and was bleeding uncontrollably.
A 15-year-old girl had minor injuries to the right side of her body.
Medics were able to remove the teens via helicopter and take them to an area hospital. Both the boy and the girl's injuries were said to be non-life threatening.
After investigating the incident further, deputies learned that the teens had been hiking with a group when the boulder came loose and rolled over the boy and struck the girl.
