BAYOU CORNE, LA (WAFB) -

People who live near the massive sinkhole site in southeast Louisiana will likely be happy with a new plan being pushed for by state officials that could cut months off the investigation.

Instead of drilling two wells 6,000 feet deep, the state is allowing Texas Brine to use 3D seismic imaging to further explore what's below the site in Assumption Parish.

Experts said this is a quicker way to get data back, which in turn, speeds up the process for getting people back in their homes.

Officials added the recent rains are not causing the sinkhole to expand.
