TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
The freezing temperatures are taking a toll on many plants. Luckily there are a few things to do even if plants are damaged by the cold.
At the Tucson Botanical Gardens they know a thing or two about plants; like many others they have been busy protecting theirs from the cold snap.
Tucson News Now has been telling viewers how to cover and protect plants; now here is how to tell if the plant is damaged or not. It is usually all in the color and texture.
Depending on the plant, the color of the leaves will be darker and the texture will feel like jello.
If some parts of the plant are frozen, simply snip those parts off, but experts recommend waiting until it warms up again to do so. If it is a very small area, it can be trimmed away with no problem.
Frostbitten plants can take up to a year to return to their normal growth pattern, so that is when patience becomes the key.
Many plant owners won't know if some of the plants survived until spring comes around.
