Above or below ground, that is the question

ORO VALLEY, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Happening today, Oro Valley may choose a utilities plan worth several million dollars, but the issue isn't over new or old equipment, it is about how it looks.

Officials with Oro Valley will be voting later today at the Oro Valley Town Hall, either saying yes or no to a project worth $2.1 million.

Tucson Electric Power is installing new utility lines in Oro Valley.  The issue is over ‘where' to install them, above or below ground?

For years Oro Valley has had an ordinance saying utility lines must be buried underground to preserve natural beauty, but TEP would not pay for the extra work.

The Town of Oro Valley would have to pick up the tab, $2.1 million.  That all leads up to the vote tonight.

For residents who haven't had a chance to share their comments, they will have that option tonight.  City officials do anticipate a decision tonight.

If it is passed, deciding how to replenish the funds would come in the future.

The meeting is tonight at council chambers at 6 p.m.
