TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Business leaders are urging lawmakers to support new school standards designed to help better prepare students for the workplace and college.

Students and teachers at schools like Doolen Middle School will soon see new standards in place. Business leaders are saying it is a must for schools to prepare students for college and a career early on.

Leaders from Intel and Raytheon Missile Systems met with state leaders to push the importance of education in the work field today.  Regardless the cost, business leaders say they are critical.

The state will soon introduce the new ‘common core' school standards.  They will replace the state's standardized AIMS tests in the 2014-2015 school year.  The standards are designed to better teach math, reading and writing.  Common Core standards are rolling out in 47 states.

The total costs are part of a big political debate; to train teachers and carry out the new standards ranges from the millions to hundreds of millions.

Governor Jan Brewer has promised to include some funding for the new program in the budget proposal she will release tomorrow.
