Streetcar area development planning begins to take direction

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON, AZ (TNN) – Whether it's on-time or slightly delayed, a modern streetcar is coming to Tucson.

The city is now designing a roadmap that deals with how to best build within a quarter mile of the rails.

The map that the planners and consultants are using shows different segments along the line.  From left to right, or west to east, the map starts with the western terminus west of i-10, to the downtown convention area, to the downtown central area, to the downtown Congress and Fourth Avenue areas, to the central segment along Fourth, to Main Gate near U of A, and finally to the east end at University of Arizona Medical Center.

Over the past two days, planners and two consultants from Portland, Oregon, who've handled these kinds of projects, have been meeting with those who live or work in the areas within a quarter mile of the streetcar route.

The goal is to see what will make the streetcar have the best impact, and to give that plan to the mayor and council to take action. Factors include historic and neighborhood preservation, economic development, traffic planning, and walkability.
