Vail sends three to county spelling bee

Posted: Updated:

The Vail School District announced the top three finishers in its 2013 spelling bee.

David Rumph, a 4th grader at Mesquite Elementary, was the first place winner, followed by Olivia Graves, a 5th grader at Sycamore Elementary and Aleigha Weaver, a 6th grader at Old Vail Middle School.

The three will compete in the Pima County Spelling Bee on Feb. 16 at the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind. The top two finishers in that competition will move on to the Arizona State Spelling Bee in Phoenix on March 23.

The State Spelling Bee winner will represent Arizona in the Scripps National Spelling bee in Washington, DC.

Vail's winners began with classroom spelling bees, then school spelling bees and most recently the district-wide spelling bee, which was held on Jan. 18 at the Vail Theatre of the Arts.
