Marana announces spelling bee winners

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Four students will represent the Marana Unified School District in next month's Pima County Spelling Bee.

Jeremy Parry, a Marana Middle School 8th grader, won the district spelling bee by correctly spelling "gruesome." Finishing behind Parry were Thomas Rood, an Ironwood Elementary School 6th grader, Elizabeth McGee, a Tortolita Middle School 8th grader and IsaMaria Baker, a Marana Middle School 8th grader.

They will compete in the county spelling bee at the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind at 1200 W. Speedway Blvd. on Feb. 16.

The Marana Unified School District's annual District Spelling Bee was held today at Mountain View High School and pitted 28 of the district's top spellers, ranging from fourth to eighth grade against each other. 

Over 5,500 Marana Unified School District students, representing eleven elementary schools and two middle schools, competed in classroom and school spelling bees over the past two months in order to qualify for the District Bee.

The top two finishers in the county competition will move on to the Arizona State Spelling Bee in Phoenix on March 23.

The State Spelling Bee winner will represent Arizona in the Scripps National Spelling bee in Washington, DC.

    The Douglas Fire Department said an early morning fire damaged the Denny's restaurant on Fifth Street. DFD said the fire appeared to have started in the kitchen with a deep fryer.
