Memorial for K9 Ivan to be held later today

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Today the Tucson Police Department will hold a memorial service for a K-9 officer killed in the line of duty.

The memorial service for Ivan will be held today at 4 p.m. at Memorial Plaza.

Ivan was killed on December 12, after a car-jacking suspect shot him during a chase.  Many are expected to attend and speak at the memorial service.

The vet who treated Ivan the night of the shooting is set to speak.  The service will begin with the presentation of colors by the TPD Honor Guard and the Service Dog Unit will carry Ivan's remains onto the Memorial Plaza stage.

Another way to honor Ivan is being discussed; TPD Union members want to re-name the dog park at Purple Heart Park in Rita Ranch after Ivan.  They have been collecting signatures and yesterday the parks commission took a look at the request.

The memorial service will be held at Memorial Plaza, right out in front of the main police station downtown.  The service is expected to last between 30 to 45 minutes.
