Last chance for golfers to secure position in Championship

Posted: Updated:

MARANA, Ariz. (February 7, 2013) – One chance remains for players to move into the top 64 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) and solidify their position in the field for the 2013 World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship. The AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am on the PGA TOUR and Joburg Open, co-sanctioned by the European Tour and Sunshine Tour, are the final tournaments for players to earn OWGR points and punch their tickets to the Accenture Match Play Championship, which returns to The Golf Club at Dove Mountain in Marana, Ariz., February 18-24.

The 2013 Accenture Match Play Championship will feature the top 64 players in the OWGR as of Monday, February 11.  The 2013 bracket and tee times will be unveiled on Sunday, February 17, once the OWGR is updated following the conclusion of the Northern Trust Open on the PGA TOUR.

One player making a significant jump in the rankings last week was Stephen Gallacher (No. 111 to No. 60), thanks to his win at the European Tour's Omega Dubai Desert Classic.  Gallacher ended his nine-year wait for a second European Tour title in stunning fashion when the Scot holed his approach on No. 16 for his fifth eagle of the week en route to a three-shot victory margin.

Interestingly, only five players between No. 56-No. 75 in the Official World Golf Ranking are playing in official events this week. Players in the field at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, looking to hold onto a spot in the Accenture Match Play Championship, are Rafael Cabrera Bello (No. 56) and Tim Clark (No. 58). Players looking to move inside the top 64 with a good week are Geoff Ogilvy (No. 69), Brendon de Jonge (No. 71) and Fredrik Jacobson (No. 73).

Here's a look at players ranked No. 56 through 75 with one week remaining to qualify for the Accenture Match Play Championship:

The Accenture Match Play Championship will once again feature "Follow the Leaders," a program that gives fans an opportunity to fall in behind the Championship Match and follow the players down each fairway until the 2013 champion is decided.  "Follow the Leaders" will give fans the unique chance to experience the crowd, walk the fairways and view the greens from a player's perspective.  All Sunday ticket holders will be invited to "Follow the Leaders" at the Accenture Match Play Championship, the only official match-play event on the PGA TOUR schedule.

The Accenture Match Play Championship, which is the first in a series of four World Golf Championships events in 2013, has been played in the Tucson area since 2007 and at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain since 2009. Fans interested in purchasing tickets or for more information can visit www.worldgolfchampionships.com or call 520-571-0400.
