Arizona will open the doors at Hi Corbett field for the first time this Friday to play a game that matters. The Wildcats will get their first chance to defend last year's title and yes, there will be some changes.
Pitching may prove to be the strong suit of this club, at least early on. Despite losing former ace Kurt Heyer, an All-American, every other key contributor from last season's staff returns, and several freshmen have impressed in preseason practices.
Pitching depth may be a luxury that the Wildcats lacked a season ago, which may mean the weekend starters will not be asked to log as many innings as they did in 2012, evidenced by 16 complete games.
Konner Wade now takes over the position formerly filled by Heyer for the past three years. As Coach Andy Lopez says, "Heyer has handed over the baton."
On paper there doesn't appear to be that much of a drop off from last season's Friday night ace. Wade went 11-3 last year and 4-0 in the postseason with 1.29 era. Click on the video box above to hear from Wade and Lopez talk about the regular season opener.
