Explosion damages home on Tucson's west side

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A couple was displaced after their home was damaged in a gas explosion on Tucson's west side today.

A man and his wife in their early 70s were able to escape safely from their home in the 4400 block of North Obetka Avenue near West Wetmore and North Flowing Wells roads.

The explosion just after 12:30 p.m. started a fire in the roof and blasted out several of the windows in the house. Firefighters also found gaps between the roof and the brick walls.

Northwest Fire District's Community Assistance Team and the Red Cross responded to the scene to aid the family with housing needs.

Fire investigators determined the fire was caused by a gas explosion. They are still investigating the source of the explosion.

Crews from Southwest Gas and Tucson Electric Power also responded to the scene to ensure safe shut-off of the utilities.

Damage estimates were not immediately available.
