MESA, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

A woman has been shot and wounded after she allegedly pointed a gun at a police officer in a Mesa retirement community.

Mesa police said Detective Donald Williams was serving a warrant on Nannette Johnson, 52, Wednesday afternoon, charging her with driving under the influence.

Johnson told the detective that she did not want to go to jail and then ran into her home at Dream Land Villa retirement community.

Williams followed her into the home and saw her grab a gun before fleeing through the house, police said.

Mesa police said Williams told her to drop the gun and once they were outside the back door, Johnson allegedly pointed the gun at William. Police said William fired one shot at the woman.

She was taken to the hospital and is in serious but stable condition.

William is a 9-year veteran of the Mesa Police Department.
