The Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority has voted to approve an option to buy land for public housing in Hamilton County.
CMHA plans on building low income apartments on the property and are under federal mandate to build low income apartments in the area.
The vote was 5-2.
Kelly Kramer with CMHA said the board, "approved the ability to pursue an option to purchase the land contingent upon also purchasing nearby land owned in Green Township and Hamilton County; that land having favorable Phase 1 environmental students, receiving appropriate zoning and achieving funding for the project."
However, the proposition has drawn a fair share of opposition. On Monday, township trustees met to debate the issue. Mary Kuhl has been sending out emails and urging her neighbors to attend the CMHA vote on Tuesday.
"I don't know how any rational person can come to the Westside of town and think that we need more multi-family unit apartments and low income housing," said Kuhl. "Green Township trustees should be ashamed of themselves and the people who live in Green Township; you're getting the middle finger from your elected officials and I think it's insulting."
Kuhl says this is an example of what she sees as local politicians riding roughshod over voters.
Gerhard Milkuhn lives at the entrance of Green Township. Milkuhn says he feels short-changed at what he sees as a lack of transparency.
"All of the property adjacent to me in my neighborhood is going to be impacted in some way," explains Milkuhn, "and yet I'm not even an important part of the discussion."
The purchase includes four acres of property along North Bend road near Western Northern Boulevard for $625,000.
Kuhl says this sale will mean a loss to the township.
"CMHA doesn't pay Hamilton County taxes so you're eroding our tax base and you're eroding the tax base of the people who live around here because they're leaving," said Kuhl. "They're going to move."
