TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
Operation Southern Shield will be taking place along
I-10 February 27 and 28, as Arizona Department of Public Safety officers
enforce laws pertaining to commercial traffic.
DPS officers and agents from several other agencies
will be enforcing state and federal laws that pertain to commercial traffic. According to Arizona DPS this means
violations of ‘hours of service' in driver logbooks. These violations can lead to driver's fatigue
and an increase in crashes.
Other areas of focus will be on education, of both
commercial drivers and other motorists, with subjects like where ‘blind spots'
are on larger eighteen wheelers, and other hazards drivers need to avoid.
Operation Southern Shield will take place along I-10
from Casa Grande to the New Mexico border.
In 2011, 759 commercial trucks were inspected along
the route, leading to 80 drivers and 73 trucks being placed out of
service. While in 2012, 792 trucks were
inspected, leading to 119 drivers and 63 trucks being placed out of service.
